Story
Thank you for taking the time to read this...
In 2004 Sri Lanka faced a Tsunami and has only recently seen the end of a 26-year civil war which brought immense suffering to the population. Many people have been left with mental health issues and the healthcare services do not have the capacity to give everyone the support that is needed.
I have been lucky enough to have secured a 4 week voluntary mental health placement with SLV, a UK based organisation that provides students and graduates with hands-on work experience abroad in the mental health sector. During this time I will be putting my degree of Psychology into practice by working with people of all ages living with mental illness and suffering with trauma, providing support for those less fortunate and promoting positive mental health.
This will include working 5 days a week, running support activities in clinical/community settings for those at all varying stages of their recovery. As well as working in psychiatric facilities, rehabilitation centres and mental health clinics, using physical and mental activities to uncover the creative potential of the service users.
I will also be teaching English in schools/training institutes, helping improve simple daily skills such as effective communication and coping with emotions/stress. Also working with children with special needs.
There are very little opportunities to seek support and help for those in the Sri Lankan community who are mentally ill or trauma sufferers. And many can't afford education. SLV works on many projects in Sri Lanka targeting all of these issues.
I am due to undertake this unique opportunity in June 2019, for this placement I am required to generate £1500. This is to help cover the costs of my training, visa, travel, home-stay accommodation and help SLV continue to provide these opportunities. This is where I would greatly appreciate your help and any donations in order for me to successfully help the suffering people of Sri Lanka.
Thank you so much for everything, Aneesa xo
