Story
In October 2025, our sister Susan suffered an ischemic stroke. She underwent an emergency thrombectomy to remove a large blood clot from the left side of her brain. Until that moment, our family had very little understanding of just how severe and life-changing a stroke could be. The reality hit us quickly and profoundly.
If it had not been for Susan’s husband, Ron, recognising the signs of a stroke so quickly using F.A.S.T, the outcome could have been very different. He quite literally saved her life.
After several weeks in neurology and high dependency wards, Susan was transferred to the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at the QEUH. The staff there work tirelessly to provide outstanding care, compassion, and support. Susan is still being cared for in the unit. Life now looks very different for her, but she continues to make progress, with the hope of returning home soon.
Within the rehabilitation unit is the Day Room, run by Kate. This space offers patients and their families a place for comfort, creativity, and connection. Activities include art, music, games, and social events, all of which play a vital role in patients’ recovery and wellbeing.
Everything in the Day Room is funded purely through donations. There is no NHS funding for this space. Having spent many months there and seeing how hard Kate works to raise money for such a meaningful cause, we felt it was time to give something back.
This year, Cheryl and I will be taking part in the Kiltwalk, alongside our Mum and Dad, Sandra and Jim, who will be completing the Wee Wander. Our goal is to raise funds to provide additional materials for the Day Room and help support activities and events for the patients.
A stroke can happen to anyone, but knowing the signs and acting F.A.S.T can save a life.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
