Story

Thank you for visiting my just giving page.

How I got involved!

In 2013 I worked with Adrian Burholt on a project based in London. At that time, working with a Christian charity, he planned and undertook a trip to South Sudan to help people where life expectancy is only 42 years and where only 0.4% of girls achieve secondary education. Adrian's description of what he saw and the help he and the charity provided was compelling. Five years later, I met up with Adrian for lunch.....

He explained that he was a founding member of Projects Delivering Hope (PDH) which now works in the South Sudanese refugee camps in Uganda. Since gaining independence from the north in 2011, South Sudan has suffered civil war with accompanied horrific levels of conflict. Almost 4 million people became displaced and around 1.2 million are now living in the Ugandan refugee camps provided by UNHCR.

What happened next

Adrian told me that in June 2018 PDH delivered a pilot 'business essentials' training day in the Morobi Refugee camp, Uganda. It was so successful PDH was invited back to provide more in-depth training. The programme will enable the South Sudanese people to create and grow enterprises through both practical business training and financial support. I decided I wanted to do something that felt useful and worthwhile. I am delighted and privileged to be joining the PDH team in the Morobi Regugee camp to help deliver the next training event in July 2019.

Help I need from you

Financial help

The total cost of the trip is £3,000 which includes my travel costs. It also includes a £1,000 contribution to a start-up community managed savings fund that will be used to give the businesses a kick start. £500 is also going towards running the conference for up to 60 small businesses each of which will receive training manuals, notebooks and meals over the four days. Anything over the £3,000 raised will be added to the £1,500 and go directly into this fund. From experience we know that 98% of loans taken out under this scheme are repaid. Within 3 years we expect the savings schemes to have become completely self sufficient. Anything you can contribute will be amazing.

Raise awareness

Tell your family, friends and business colleagues about the work PDH is undertaking. Help us to raise awareness of the success of these workshops. And perhaps you too will be inspired one day to join the team. See www.projectsdeliveringhope.org.uk
