Story

Help Twyla - a unique child - live a better life

Twyla is a happy five year old girl, diagnosed soon after birth with a life limiting condition, one of just 1200 people worldwide. The very rare metabolic condition, known as CDG, means she cannot talk, sit unaided, crawl or walk because her muscle tone, sight and speech are so badly affected. She also struggles with several types of seizure, including apnoea, where she stops breathing without warning, meaning oxygen and breathing equipment must be carried wherever she goes.

When first diagnosed doctors predicted she wouldn't live beyond the age of two. But Twyla is a fighter and has two devoted and loving parents. Neville, her dad, gave up work to make sure she gets the 24 hour care she needs. Charlene is a working mum, who spends any spare time raising awareness about CDG. To meet the three of them is to be touched by their determination.

Animal Antiks met Twyla for the first time in early 2016 and staff were so taken with her strength and character that they agreed to work with her free of charge, whenever she was well enough to visit the farm. Everyone looks forward to those visits and the time she spends with the animals is amazing therapy for her - whether that's stroking a chicken or a dog, or riding a pony.

Now Twyla is five she's too heavy to lift in and out of the family car, so attending school, visiting Animal Antiks or enjoying short family breaks, will become impossible unless Neville and Charlene can get a vehicle adapted for wheelchair access and big enough to carry breathing equipment and everything else Twyla needs. The deposit alone for such a vehicle is £5,000 - can you help?
