In September 2017, I will be going, as a member of Imperial College Global Brigades, to rural Honduras to build a water system and implement public health infrastructure projects ranging from sanitation stations to 'eco-stoves' and cementing the floors of community homes. The projects will last over 10 day and contribute to a sustainable development model employed by Global Brigades Inc.- " the largest student led health and sustainable development organisation"- see www.globalhealthbrigades.org for more info. Global Brigades "holistic" development model incorporates a range of types of projects: medical & dentistry, engineering & water, public health, microfinance, business, environmental & human rights. This model ensures that the projects delivered by the community members and student volunteers are sustainable and that communities are empowered to continue progressing. A key element of these projects is education; we will teach the children in the local school about the importance of hygiene and responsible water consumption to stay healthy and free from illness. The water system will give local community members access to clean drinking water which they currently have to travel long distances for and, during the dry season, have very limited access. This is becoming an increasing issue due to the impacts of climate change.

These funds will go towards facilitating the water and public health projects that I will be involved with. Global Brigades is building a strong reputation for quality delivery of their projects due to their commitment to empowering community members and I cannot wait to get involved in the process.
