Story
Jyoti, who is is blind and has a learning disability, lives where there are many slums. Life is difficult for a disabled street child like Jyoti but suddenly life has changed and simply surviving is the problem. Last week the city of Kolkata was placed in lockdown for 21 days with four hours of notice to stop the Coronavirus spreading. The family have no income except from basic jobs which no longer exist or begging but following lockdown the streets are empty. Without support Jyoti and disabled street children like her will starve.
I have worked closely in the past with the amazing team at HOPE Hospital and they have supported disabled street children like Jyoti and they will support her now. They urgently need to distribute food packs to families like Jyoti’s who have no income due to the lockdown .
Please help the Hope Hospital team by making a small donation. Currently 10kg of rice and 2kg of dal, which will feed a family of five for two weeks and costs £18. Give Hope to Jyoti and her family.
Anna
We have an update from Hope Hospital. The disabled children suffered from malnutrican before the pandemic but now they are struggling to stave off starvation. Thank you for your support. The money you have donated has been sent to Samiran and his team but we will keep the page open a little longer (Anna and Jon):
"Many of these families depend on the income of daily labourers, literally earning a daily wage for their daily bread. With no work and no savings to fall back on they very quickly ran out of food supplies. The very real panic and fear of starvation set in. We think of Samiran and the team risking their own lives every day to give out this food to the desperate. We are very grateful to them and to you all."

4 years agoAs you may know the pandemic has reached many in India. On top of this was the terrible storm which left some of the street families with disabled children without shelter. Our support person in Kolkata and his family, as well as the Hope Hospital Manager, have been ill and had to self isolate. However, they are back working for the disabled street children. So your support has made a huge difference. Thank you. Jon and Anna

4 years agoThank you to all who have contirbuted to this fund. All the money raised has gone directly to the people who need our support. Anna is delighted to tell you that the disabled street children she supports are alive and surviving the multiple problems they are facing. In addition to the worst storm in 10 years in Kolkata which destroyed their plastic sheeted homes, they have endured starvation and coronavirus thanks to you. Anna and her Dad.

4 years agoSome good news. Jyoti was ill and went into Hope Hospital but is now OK and back with her family. I have been sent photos of Pinki, my friend who is autistic and has learning difficulties like me, and she was smiling after being given a food pack by the Manager of Hope Hospital. I have a photo of the nurse Sonam handing out food to a family who live on the railway tracks near Nimtala slums (below). There is a group of 8 blind people who live here, including Anita (see: http://www.different-lives.co.uk/kolkata/bijay-and-anita/). Thanks, Anna.
