    Story

Myself and three other midwifery students have taken the amazing opportunity to travel to Ghana for four weeks in March 2017 for an elective placement.

During this time we will be mainly based in the hospital's labour ward and also plan to travel to more rural community settings. We will provide hands on care, hopefully delivering lots of little ones! Our shifts will be 7am to 2pm Monday to Friday and we will make the most of our weekends to explore Ghana. Due to the nature of the care we will provide and the area we are visiting, our trip has been made possible through the help of Global Medical Project. They have arranged accommodation, hospital placements and lots of other additional assistance.

As an underdeveloped country Ghana's maternity statistics are horrific with infant mortality rate (<1yr) at 49 :1000 compared to Scotland's rate of 3.7 :1000. This will definitely be a challenging experience and so I aim to really bring all my theoretical knowledge and practical skills that I have learnt through my degree so far. We have such fantastic maternity services in Scotland and I hope this experience will really make me appreciate what high level of care we provide through our NHS.

This invaluable trip is completely self funded so any donations will be HUGELY appreciated! We are aiming to bring an extra suitcase of donations for the maternity unit and orphanage that we plan to visit so any fundraising money will be contribute to these donations.

I am extremely excited about the chance to experience world wide midwifery care and I hope this may encourage me to volunteer in future as a qualified midwife. We are going to try and fit in lots of fundraising before we head out in March but any money donated through this page will mean so much to me and the new parents & babies in Ghana!

If you have any questions about our trip please don't hesitate to ask!

    MUCH LOVE,

    Annie Ramsay-Stagg
