Kerala is in the midst of an unprecedented flood havoc. The calamity has caused immeasurable misery and devastation. Many lives lost. Hundreds of homes destroyed and many more damaged. For the first time in history, 27 dams in the State had to be opened. Never had the State witnessed a calamity of this scale. One million people displaced, roads and infrastructure damaged.
Every single house in Kuttandu, Alleppy District, Kerala; is submerged.95% of people in our village were evacuated.The region was twice submerged this monsoon season.. Now the has rain stopped and the flood water level still has not come down fully, as the region is 2.2 metres below sea levelw.
According to latest news ,80% of the people still living in refugee camps. Kuttanadu has been surviving on backwater fishing, paddy cultivation and tourism.8500 hectares of paddy cultivation in its entirety lost. 80% of livestock lost .All electricty supply lost , as all trnasformers under water.People started returning home and start realising the horror; They have lost everything! The dead pet animals and dead livestock have started to decay .There is a huge sanitation and health risk.
According to recent news 3 people have committed suicide and many depressed. As you all know, this is the Onam festival season! One of the biggest festival in Kerala.In history, non of the Keralites are talking about Onam . Now people need help to rebuild their lives. The path to recovery can be long & arduous, but you can make a difference by joining the rebuilding efforts.
