Story

I am raising money to support my son in getting an Pathological demand avoidance ( PDA) diagnosis this is autistic spectrum disorder. These children demonstrate difficulties with social interaction, social communication, restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour. The assessment of this disorder is conducted by the Elizabeth Newson Centre They have discovered this relatively unknown area of autism benefits from early diagnosis and that when appropriate interventions are put in place outcomes can be greatly improved .Traditional methods of therapies of treating autism are unable to help with PDA. A concrete diagnosis will enable him to get more targeted support which research suggests that early help and support can ameliorate some of the more severe symptoms. The assessment process involves a Clinical Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist and a Playworker (at the very least). The child plays with the Playworker who starts off by allowing the child to do what they want, then very gradually tries to persuade the child to do other things ie increasing small requests/demands. The session lasts a few hours. The play session is videoed so that other professionals can witness the child's behaviour. The Play room has a 2 way mirror so that the Parents can see everything that is happening. The Parents speak with the Psychologist. The whole appointment can last up to 4/5 hrs.

A more detailed explanation of the disorder is highlighted here PDA information
