    Story

The 24 hour charity game has become one of our biggest and most popular events...the highlight of our season!

Over the last 5 years we have raised awareness and money for these amazing charities - The British Heart Foundation, OCD, Dementia, Arthritis, Prostate Cancer, Crohn’s and Colitis as well as Mind and JDRF.

This year we will be raising money for another two great charities... Alzheimer’s Society and Volunteer Zambia.

The Alzheimer’s team will be captained by JJ Royal who plays BUCS 1 and NBL D4. Sam Gilbert, Bucs 2 and Local Men player will be working alongside JJ.

Here's what JJ said about his charity and the event: ”In my first two years at University I have had the pleasure of taking part in the 24-hour charity game and feel fortunate to have been selected to co-captain this year. With a very close family member being affected by Dementia and Alzheimer’s it is difficult to see them go through the every-day struggles they face due to the disease. Not only for them but over 850,000 people who are living with this in the UK. Seeing the help and support that they receive from volunteers and charities is amazing and something I wish to contribute to. Raising money for such a great cause with the hope of one day finding a cure would be an amazing achievement for me. Having the help and support of the Archers family around me during this is something I will never forget, and I hope this year will be one to remember as we aim to raise as much as we can for this amazing charity. "

Here's what Sam said about the event: "Being a part of the club since 2017 has been a fantastic way to play the sport I love and make some great friends. This will be my first-time taking part in the 24-hour game and I cannot wait. Come and join us for this ultimate basketball game and feel good about supporting this charity who are doing some amazing work to support and better the lives of those affected. Those of you that know me, know that I’m always up for a challenge and the 24-hour fundraiser seems like the ultimate test for someone who likes to spend a significant amount of time sleeping. So, come down, get involved and help raise money and awareness for this worthy cause."

Sarah Wagstaff who is our Assistant Director at Archers Basketball and Lecturer at Cardiff Met will be captaining Team Zambia. She will be assisted by the students of Cardiff Met. Here’s what Sarah said about her charity and the event: "‘Volunteer Zambia’ is a project designed to make a difference to the lives of young Zambian people by empowering and enriching communities through the power of sport, leadership and education. Cardiff Met is a member of the Wallace Group, a partnership created in 2006 by several leading UK Universities who select and train specialist sports students to travel to Zambia to volunteer their time and expertise to develop sport, health and wellbeing in the community. This year I’ll be travelling to Zambia along with three Cardiff Met students – Zoe Rogers, Daniel Gunner and Erin Walters. We will be working with local volunteers in some of the most deprived areas of the nation’s capital, Lusaka where we will be organising and delivering school PE lessons, community sport development programmes and health and well-being workshops.

Fundraising is essential for the project to run as successfully as it does and enables us to contribute to its delivery and provide much needed equipment and other resources to the community. It is fantastic that we are able to have Volunteer Zambia as one of the charities this year, we cannot thank you enough for all your support and donations.
