Story

film

Arlesey, a small village in Bedfordshire launched an ambitious project to commemorate the centenary of WW1 by laying a poppy cross on the grave of every serviceman listed on the village war memorial in 2014. We were incredibly successful over 300 community members got involved visiting 87 graves spanning 7 countries we even created a full length documentary of our project which was broadcast on TV.

Inspired by the Woodland Trust we promised to create and plant a memorial copse as a lasting legacy of the project. The copse will provide a sanctuary of remembrance, contemplation and hopefully will smarten up a bit of the village that is currently a wasteland. The town council has given us some funding to start the project. We have the trees, and a design, we also have appointed Amenity Trees to do the work and the town council will maintain the copse - however if we are to realise our original plan of including a monolith with some inscriptions from the letters the soldiers sent home and to have some seating - we need a little bit more. The Copse will open in November (hopefully) in time for Remembrance Sunday and already Gothic Mede has committed to involvement with its opening and I'm hopeful further community groups will get involved too.

Please give even a small amount and share the page with your friends, family and other Arlesey residents.

Thank you for your continued support and lets finish this project in style with a legacy that future generations can enjoy too!
