Story
Sickle cell can cause severe pain episodes for sufferers resulting in many physical and mental challenges. Several pilot programs have taken place in hospitals and community centers across the country and have proven to provide a welcomed distraction from health issues and pain for its participants. Art therapy has a positive impact for those with medical conditions as it is way of expressing emotion and most importantly a distraction from everyday challenges they may face.
How the funding will be spent
We would like to raise £1000 to fund 100 art therapy bags for children living with Sickle Cell in the Thames valley area. £10 will fund one art therapy bag for one child, this will include a tote bag to carry the art supplies in, an A4 sketch pad, an A5 notebook, colouring pencils, colouring pens, stickers, drawing pencils, pencil sharpener, pencil case and an eraser.
How this will benefit the community
Teaching children different ways to positively express themselves decreases their chances of developing mental health conditions and isolation. Children with Sickle have to attend regular hospital appointments, some need regular blood transfusions, hospital admissions, severe pain episodes, anxiety and feelings of isolation. Having a positive distraction can really improve their mood, feelings and thoughts and teach them to express themselves.
