My name is Asako, a student from the United World College Atlantic. On the 21st of October, I have decided to shave my head to fund raise for the Lighthouse Project!!

Lighthouse Project is a platform to inspire and support student projects and initiatives. Its aim is to shine light on the UWC (United World College) mission which states that "education is a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future" as well as guide students through their journey as leaders and changemakers.

Prior to attending UWC Atlantic, I was studying in Japan. There, the environment is highly critical of their students to which the pressure of planning what one's profession and future is often influenced by society, especially by individual's parents and teachers. Nonetheless, some of my friends, as well as myself, had many dreams of a future pursuing our passions which contrast from the 'average' careers such as being a doctor or lawyer. However, we knew of very few people who could help us turn our ideas into a realistic project proposal.

Having now currently attended UWC for slightly over a year, I am grateful for the numerous chances to which the school has allowed and encouraged me to pursue my dreams such as my personal research of developing technology for observing underwater ecosystems via space satellite.

By shaving my head for this cause, I hope to promote and encourage the creation of educational platforms such as the Lighthouse Project as I recognise the impact to which these programs may help individuals develop a realistic plan for committing to a future profession inspired by their passion rather than conforming to societal pressure. I recognise that it may be idealistic of me to want the encourage students worldwide to take action and pursue their passions, however, I believe that the more support to which projects such as the Lighthouse Project can receive, the more impact they will have and the more lives it will change.

改めまして、こんにちは。United World College Atlantic (UWCイギリス校）に現在通っている北井です。今回私は、Lighthouseというプロジェクトを支援するために、坊主にすることを決めました。

Lighthouse は学生主体の活動を支援するプロジェクトで、UWCの理念に光をあて、学生がリーダー、改革者として自分の想いに沿った道を進む際、灯台のような存在になることを目的としています。

日本の高校に通っていた際、私は進路に関する周りからのプレッシャーの大きさに疑問を感じていました。安定した高収入職についてほしい家族、進学実績を伸ばしたい塾。 どんな職業に就くか、どこの大学に入るかが重要視され続け、その後、自分は何をしたいのかに注目することはほとんどありませんでした。私の友人の多くも、目指したい職業はあるものの、なぜその職業なのかが自分でもよくわからない。学校の授業と部活、塾だけでも忙しい中、どうやって自分の本当にやりたいことなんて見つける機会があるんだ。と悩んでいたのを覚えています。

幸い、私はトビタテでの出会いや、UWCでの生活を通じて自分が地球環境問題に興味があること、研究という方法でそれらの問題に関わりたいということを知り、恵まれた環境の中で研究を始めることができました。このことを通じて、より多くの人が自分の興味や関心を見つけ、行動に移すことができる環境が作れないかと考え始めるようになりました。

より良い環境づくりを通じて恩送りをするために何かできることを探していたところ、学校でAmnesty Head Shaving Day が開催されることになりました。坊主にすることで、Lighthouse Project に寄付を募っています。
