In Costa Rica, as in most countries in the world, it’s the rural areas that need help and assistance the most; outside the cities resources tend to dry up and children are left with far less opportunities. In Costa Rica a number of homes and care centres have been set up to care for the children who have been abandoned, neglected, abused or orphaned, as well as those whose parents simply can’t afford to take care of them during the day. Although this has been done in coordination with government authorities there is a huge shortage of help available. Costa Rica schools, the children are missing out on getting the care and attention they greatly deserve.

I want to help!!

I plan to be out there for 10 weeks, learning some Spanish, volunteering as an English teaching assistant in a school and on a project for underprivileged children and over worked staff at adoption homes and care centres in and around San Ramón, Costa Rica.

As well as this I plan to help protect and preserve some natural nesting sites from sea turtles that do not hold an official category of protection from the Costa Rican Government. These species are in danger of extinction as a result of various human activities such as infrastructure development, light pollution, transportation of vehicles and the capture of adult turtles.

This means it is increasingly important to help conserve nesting sites, which are crucial to the continued existence of the turtles.
