Seven years ago, I was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

DCM is a disease of the heart muscle where it becomes over stretched. This means it’s unable to pump blood around your body efficiently and currently there is no cure for it.

For me, DCM developed v-e-r-y slowly. It went undetected for at least 10 years before I noticed a downturn in my health.

At its worst, it meant walking from one room to another, or worse, going upstairs would leave me gasping for breath for about 5 minutes.

It is currently stabilised with a cocktail of drugs including Bumetanide, Carvedilol, Citalopram, Digoxin, Eplerenone, Ramipril & Warfarin.

In January 2012, I was fitted with a biventricular pacemaker which makes sure that both sides of the heart beat at the same time.

Fast forward to December 2016, I wanted to set myself a difficult and meaningful personal challenge. It had to be something that would require training and dedication so I've committed to run the Hull 10K on Sunday 18 June 2017.

When I set the challenge, I was unable to run 100 metres without having to stop for breath.
