Story

I go to Ashton Deaf Club on a Wednesday evening. The club started in July 2021 after the Covid lockdown ended. Many Deaf (BSL) British sign language users and hard of hearing people were isolated during the lockdown. It was a kind of relief to meet with people who understood how hard life had been.

The club has continued to grow because we have seasonal events and celebrate around topics of interest in the news. It offers support from the hearing members, trips out, festivals and fundraising events.

The Deaf club has become so large that the room is too small to house everyone comfortably. There is an alternative room upstairs, that house other community groups on different nights of the week.

I want to play my part in the fundraising and at 91 there is little I can help with. The club needs a lift so that everyone can join the groups that meet here. The Deaf club held a fundraising fashion show on Saturday, I wanted to go and help but couldn’t get upstairs to the show.

The club we use have spent their ‘not for profit’, funds on a disability toilet and are also trying to build up savings to provide the lift.

I have set myself a 31-day challenge, to walk 200 meters a day that would be 6,200 meters. If I manage a little bit further each day, I could achieve 4 miles in those 31 days of May.

If I could hand over £1,000 towards the lift, I would be over the moon.
