Weʼve raised £1,615 to Help the Neonatal Unit

Funded on Sunday, 25th December 2016

    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

For those of you who don't know, since August I've been working at Attat Hospital in rural Gurage, Ethiopia.

It's an amazing hospital run by MMS, serving a the population of about 800,000. We have about 3,500 deliveries a year, and because of the distances, the money, and the lack of comprehensive antenatal education, quite often the babies come along too soon or too sick for normal midwifery care.

Just as I arrived, a Neonatal Unit had started to be established, and with the incredibly limited drugs and equipment available, we tried very hard to keep the little babies and the sick babies alive. It wasn't easy, and it wasn't always possible, but with a few simple changes, we stand a much better chance of doing this, and eventually seeing them discharged home. At the moment, the NNU has one ITU cot and three HDU cots, but hopefully soon it'll be moving to a bigger ward space and with an increase in the cot numbers.

So... now I'm in the UK to do some fundraising before going back to Attat!

We need to raise £3000, which will cover the costs of:
    - Oxygen concentrators
    - Stethoscopes, pulse oximeters, stick thermometers, neonatal BP cuffs

But also, because baby clothes and nappies are too expensive for the mothers of Gurage region to buy, I want to make sure that whilst babies are with us in the NNU, they are kept clean to prevent infection, so to that end, the following would also be fantastic:
    - White* vests and long-sleeved sleep suits (from premature/tiny baby to 0-3 months)
    - White* hats (again, in a variety of sizes)
    - White* pillow cases (these are actually very good substitutes for a "nest", which is what it's best to make for little babies so that they're not flat on their backs the whole time!)
    - Knitted blankets
    - Unopened formula powder

*White is best for easy laundering
