Story

Our friend Janine and has a brain tumour called a meningioma. The tumour was diagnosed in 2011, but came back in 2017. Janine had radiotherapy to her brain, but swelling after the radiotherapy on the brain has affected her eyesight.

Janine is 48 and a mother to three children aged 18, 16 and 8 years old. She has worked as a nurse for 12 years in a cancer hospital treating others with cancer, but she had to give up work as her vision has got worse.

There is an evidence-based experimental treatment called Avastin that can reduce brain swelling after radiotherapy when conventional steroid treatment doesn't work. One cycle of Avastin costs around £1,700. However, although Avastin is used on other types of cancer, it is not available on the NHS to treat brain swelling after radiotherapy.

We are asking for your generous help to fund 4 cycles of treatment with Avastin on a compassionate basis to try restore Janine's eyesight. Janine has been on medical leave for over six months now, but all she wants to do is to go back to work to do the job she loves helping other people with cancer.
