Story
Alan, George, Jim and Laz are 4 friends and colleagues who will be walking, on May 8th, part of the Camino in Spain from Vigo to Santiago de Compostela. Just over 100 kilometres in 5 days.
This is the third year in a row Alan, George and Jim have walked 'the way' and this year they have invited Laz along as an apt substitute for Richard. In previous years we have raised money for Alzheimer's UK, Men's Sheds UK and MacMillan Cancer Support.
Last year we lost a much loved and respected colleague, George Mathers. Towards the end of his life, George spent time in the St Vincent's Hospice in Renfrewshire. They provide invaluable support to individuals, and their loved ones, when they need it, whether that be for many years or in just the final weeks and days of life. St Vincent’s provides culturally sensitive wrap-around palliative care services for people of all ethnicities, genders and sexual orientations. The hospice relies on £6,000 a day to keep their doors open, so any support is welcomed.
As the newbie the guys have given me (Laz) the honour of picking the charities this year. In addition to St Vincent’s Hospice we’ll also be raising funds for Teenage Cancer Trust. Every day, seven young people aged 13-24 hear the words “you have cancer”. They will each need specialised nursing care and support to get them through it. Teenage Cancer Trust are the only UK charity dedicated to meeting this vital need – so no young person faces cancer alone. Unfortunately last year, I lost my friend Fin to cancer. He was a great supporter of the charity and the work they do.
