STRIKE VICTORY UPDATE!

The strike has now ended as of 8th Sept 2021 as the workers have come to an agreement with the bakery owner. The bakery is now under new management (more details on this to come) and all workers have the chance to return to work without any redundancies! This is a massive win and all the funds raised by fellow workers via justgiving have been a massive help in giving strikers the confidence to hold out for better terms and get this result. The support received, along with the threat of continued strikes and pickets affecting other linked businesses made this a possibility.

To confirm, those funds raised will still go to the strikers to cover the financial impact of the strike while not in work.

Workers at The Assembly Bakery have started an open ended wildcat strike in response to management notice to employees that half will be let go. All 9 bakery staff have been taking part in the strike since the 26th August and intend to continue until management agrees to their demands.

Staff felt mistreated and disrespected by the bakery management who could have done more to involve the workers in the future of the business before the sudden announcement of redundancies. Some workers were given as little as one weeks notice to find another job.

Strikers are asking that all of those who have been fired are given confirmed employment in one of their shareholders’ sister companies, or to be furloughed until September 30 or for the workers to take over running of the business themselves as a co-operative.

While negotiations with the employer are taking place the workers will remain on strike until a deal is reached. While the workplace is closed the strikers are not being paid so to keep the strike going and help them achieve their demands please consider supporting the workers by donating to this strike fund.

All the fund will be paid directly to the strikers so that they are not out of pocket and able to pay for necessities while taking a powerful stand for their rights and setting an example for others who work in hospitality and retail and feel mistreated.
