As some of you may or may not know Barney was diagnosed with Autism when he was around 3 years old. Despite all of the challenges this threw at him, Barney achieved many things we were told we could only dream of. Barney left school with GCSE’s, went on to college and was supported onto a work placement. All Barney wants to do is live his life the same way as you or I. Barney was learning to drive, living independently in a supported living service and enjoying life. Then things changed and Barney’s world (and ours) were turned upside down, Barneys supported employment came to an End, which caused him great stress and anxiety. Not only was this awful for Barney , it was only a week after this placement ended when we received the worst phone call. Barney had a seziure whilst swimming. We were optimistic this may have just been caused by a fall, however, after all the tests Barney was diagnosed with Epilepsy. People with epilepsy cannot drive unless they are seizure free For 12 months. Sadly after almost a year of seizure control Barney had another seizure. We are now in a position where his work placement is going to end again and as a family we are anxious, worried and scared about how this will impact upon Barney. People with epilepsy, particularly the kind of seizures Barney has, the fact he is male and his age put him at increased risk of SUDEP. This is Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy, which relates to seizure activity potentially overnight.

So how does this all relate? Well.... for anyone who knows Barney knows he is an absolute animal lover. The bond he shares with animals is fascinating. Not only is Barneys dream to have a dog (specifically a PUG) but also dogs are known to reduce the risk of SUDEP. This dog will also give Barney purpose and a reason to stay positive after his job ends. Due to limited income Barney is unable to fund this himself and due to the frequency of his seizures he is not eligible for a specialist dog. However we are hoping with everyones support we could support Barney to achieve his dream and support him in the process :) Any donation big or small is greatly appreciated xx
