Story

On the 6th June 1944 (D Day) at 0016 hrs the 6th Airborne under the command of Major John Howard captured the bridges Pegasus and Horsa. My Father Cpl Ted Tappenden was Major Howards radio Operator and when the bridges had been captured Major Howard ordered my Father to send out the code words "Ham and Jam" Ham the code for Pegasus bridge, Jam for Horsa bridge captured successfully. When ever anybody talks of this successful operation everybody says "Ham and Jam". As time passes memories fade and I would like to have a monument erected so that the next generations can say Ham and Jam and see and feel the bravery of the members of the Coup de Main.
