I have an amazing opportunity to attend Medaille university in Buffalo NY, USA. Although I have been offered some financial support and I will work to contribute to the cost together with what my parents, are able to give, it isn’t enough….. I am hoping that you will take the time to read my story and be kind enough to help make my dream come true and help me to make a difference.
.My passion for basketball meant that during my last years in school I got involved in coaching to help keep kids off the street and inspire them to choose a different life path. After seeing some of the people around me fall into a life of crime after getting involved in gangs, I knew it was very hard to help them out of what for some was a no win situation. I was always told by those people that I should stay far away from the road they were following because I had more potential and had something going for me in basketball. Witnessing some go to prison affected the way I approached helping younger players. I knew I would need to change their mind set and help them understand that living that type of life was not something to aspire to. I wanted to help them recognise there is a choice.
Alongside this I have questioned what makes a truly elite sports person. As I have matured I understand that our mind set plays a major part, in becoming successful. This applies to any facet of life, whether it be sport, education or in the workplace. It is the main reason I want to become a sports psychologist.
Having the chance to attend Medaille excites me so much. I am inspired by the challenges ahead, not only from an academic perspective but also the personal and social ones. It is my dream to play college basketball. I know it will make a massive difference to the way I live the rest of my life. I am prepared to put in the work necessary to succeed and achieve my goals and understand that I have to work hard to be successful.
