Indigo Zaffino is a 16 year old Huddersfield based foil fencer who represents Great Britain internationally.

She has just been selected to fence for England in the New Zealand Commonwealth Cadet and Junior Championships in July. This is huge honour and a very exciting opportunity for any athlete. Fencing is a particular challenge in the North of England as there are fewer sparing partners therefore Indigo has had to work especially hard to keep pace with competitors from London and Edinburgh who have more opportunities and access to more resources.

New Zealand is an amazing chance for Indigo to represent England and also Yorkshire and be a role model for other girls in the north. However fencing is not a funded sport. We have had to pay for all kit, national and international travel, clubs, training camps and coaching and we work multiple jobs to pay for this. We have been advised that the Commonwealths is going to be very expensive. Just for Indigo, we are looking at approximately £3500 for just the basic flights and accommodation.
