Weʼve raised £1,239 to my final year of my midwifery training one month elective in Arusha, Tanzania.

Story
In February 2018 I will be travelling to Arusha, Tanzania. I will be volunteering in a local hospital for a month in a busy maternity ward. I will be caring for women during pregnancy and bringing new life into the world.
I believe working alongside midwives with limited medical support, a lack of basic equipment and high birth rate will positively influence my midwifery practice.
- Currently 36% of Tanzanians live below the basic needs poverty line.
- Only 50% of babies are born with a midwife/nurse/doctor present
- 6.3% of women are living with AIDS.
- Almost 8,000 women die every year during pregnancy and child birth as a result of conditions that could have been prevented or treated.
I do not believe I can change the world in a month but I want to empower women in childbirth and give new born babies the best possible chance.
As student midwives, we receive a bursary which I use to cover my rent and bills. We are on placement 60% of the time and work the hours of full time qualified midwives. Thankfully, I have a part time job at Civerinos restaurant who have been understanding of my university commitments. This allows me to work in-between placement shifts and I have managed to save enough for my flights. I will also be organizing fundraising events and my boyfriend Wes has volunteered to run the Great Scottish Run half marathon in October, asking for donations to be made in support of my journey.
Without your support I would never be able to go on my elective placement with Global Medical Projects, allowing me to travel safely and ethically. I need to raise £950 which will support these very basic needs:
- Basic accommodation in a house or with a host family.
- Food while working.
- A donation to the hospital I will be working in.
- Myself and Rachael, who I will be travelling with, also want to gift an infant bag and resuscitation mask to the hospital we will be working
-I will be gratefully collecting donations of baby clothing.
Best Wishes

Hello, I am Becky in 2015 I returned to Edinburgh Napier University to become a midwife. I want support and empower women in in pregnancy and childbirth. The last two years of my life training have been at times surreal, terrifying and amazing.
