    Story

Update October 2020 - Beeston ladies’ 1st team captain, Lauren Burrell and men’s stalwart, Robbie Gleeson have been chosen to take part in the fundraising skydive for the club.

In a public address broadcast live on Bee TV, Beeston Hockey Club chairman, Graham Griffiths explained how the club are planning to raise money for the 2020/21 season.

With the prospect of reduced sponsorship revenue following the pandemic, the club are exploring other avenues of income to help support the men’s and ladies’ performance programmes. The clubs executive committee have continued to meet during the lockdown using Zoom and at the last meeting a unique suggestion was put forward which surprisingly got the seal of approval - A Skydive.

Graham Griffiths commented, “We are going to throw two players from our performance squads out of an aircraft at 14,000ft. One man and one woman. The lucky ones will be drawn out of a hat in September, a week before the jump.”

The skydive is set to take place towards the end of the season at Langer airfield in Nottingham. After exiting the aircraft the players will freefall for 45 to 50 seconds, reaching speeds of over 120 mph, until hopefully their parachute is deployed. The descent under the parachute will take several minutes, during which time the chosen lucky ones will enjoy the amazing views of the Nottinghamshire countryside.

Graham added, “We’ve got to find other methods of fundraising and this is one very unique method. Virtually every sector of business has been affected by coronavirus and it is understandable that sponsorship may not be as forthcoming as it once was. We have to find a way around it if we are going to continue to compete in the top flight.”

The club have decided not to set a target for the skydiving fundraiser so the sky really is the limit, however, it is hoped we can raise at least £10,000 through this skydiving extravaganza.
