Story

In Zanzibar many people have very little and life can be very difficult - a large percentage of the population are surviving on less than 75p per day. It is estimated that 12% of children on Zanzibar have acute malnutrition and average life expectancy is 57 years compared to nearly 82 years in the UK. I will be spending 10 days volunteering in one of the two large schools on the outskirts of Zanzibar Island’s Stone Town. Together they educate a combined total of 10,000 children between the ages of 6-18.

The schools have so many more students than we have here in England that they are required to split the school day in two, running classes for half the students in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. Because of this, many students are missing out on the full education they deserve. Typically in the mornings I expect to be helping with English and Maths. This will include the use of text books, writing out activities on the chalkboard and engaging students in interactive learning through singing and different activities. I am already a 'Sports Leader' at my school and so I hope to use these skills in the afternoons when I expect to be helping with PE lessons.

The money that I raise will help pay for the airfare to Zanzibar and my accommodation and food. This is something I really want to do so thank you for helping me.
