I've raised £750 to help a new friend of mine who has been homeless on the streets of Clapham since April '18, put down a deposit on a home.

Story

Steve had sat in the same spot, cold and alone, for about 7 months with nothing but a small bag of possessions, I had walked past him most days but never once had he asked me for anything. Then one day I saw on social media that a nice gesture is to find an old bag you don't use, fill it with things that may serve a person in need and then give it to them. I immediately thought of Steve, filled a bag with warm clothes, food, a book and a card with a note to let him know i respected him alongside a small amount of money.

I nervously walked to where I usually saw him and asked if I could sit with him for a minute. For the next 20 minutes we had a lovely chat, he inspired me with the mentality he takes to the position he finds himself in, and I learned of the unfortunate set of circumstances that led to him being without a home. I also learned that Steve doesn't drink, take drugs (other than the odd cigarette that occasionally gives him great comfort) and he never asks anyone for anything.

Steve has a professional qualification and a job available to him, without a home the job isn't an option however. Steve has been pro-active in speaking with charities to see if they can help and one such charity has agreed to cover half of the deposit he needs for the accommodation available to him. That still leaves him needing just over £700, where that money will come from he has no idea. His daily task is currently to somehow be given enough money to eat and possibly get a roof over his head to sleep. There is a local shelter that helps other people in need but he has to queue from 2pm and there is no guarantee, so he chooses to be in control of his destiny by sitting on the streets hoping for kind donations.

Steve doesn't deserve to be where he finds himself and he needs help. Most people don't know of misfortune and bracket him unworthy of their time or conversation. In sharing his story I hope to change his life by helping him get back into accommodation, from there he is confident he can get his life back on track, I believe him. If anyone can spare the smallest of donations it would be incredible, I will raise this money and I am making my own donations accordingly, the quicker I can do it the sooner Steve stops sleeping in fear of his life and can get back to where he deserves to be.

Thank you for anyone who reads, shares or donates, I greatly appreciate your time, thought, engagement and or kindness. The world needs more people like you.
