Disability support
Story
Elizabeth House, located near Mukono in Uganda, was founded in 2000 by David and Valerie Crowhurst to cater for the needs of children and young people with severe disabilities. Here children, rejected by society and often by their families, find love, care, encouragement, and a sense of identity and purpose. As these young people discover themselves and their potential, joy replaces misery and hope overcomes despair.
Our mission is to bring hope to children with disabilities - and their parents, and to create a positive attitude towards them in the community.
We do this by:
Educating communities and parents in the prevention and management of disabilities.
Identifying appropriate referrals for children with disabilities.
Providing children with disabilities with skills and knowledge.
Networking and collaborating with other service providers.
Lobbying and advocating for services for children with disabilities.
Providing affordable disability equipment to children.
Educating communities about AIDS and disability
Our programme of activities includes:
Teaching people with disabilities basics in reading, counting and writing
Vocational skills including making mats, baskets and bags and sewing and other crafts
Developing self-care skills including dressing and bathing
Provision of disability equipment physiotherapy, exercise and massage
Elizabeth House is committed to improving the quality of life of children with disabilities.
