Story
I foundered Dimobi Children Disability Trust after my personal experience with my children. Eight years ago, my late husband and I were blessed with a baby boy who we named Obinna (meaning father’s heart or dear to my father). We were so happy and delighted to have our son. However, my son was born with special needs and this took me a long time to accept. I was in denial and refusing to face up to the truth. I had been blocking everyone and everything out. I felt there was no doorway into my son’s life. To gain access and begin helping my child, l had to come through my personal barriers that hindered the growth of my son, as I was denying my son the best chance in life. When I realised my mistakes, I set out to educate other parents facing the same challenges. My experience also taught me that we have an obligation to help parents understand that we are never prepared to provide effectively care for children with autism and learning disabilities upon birth. Therefore, people with experience have a duty to share their knowledge regarding support, love and care for disabled children. As a charity organisation, we envisage a future that considers the wellbeing of families. Parents need to realise the negative impact of denial on the growth and wellbeing of children with special needs. Therefore, our workshops help to identify individual challenges and deliver training that promote effective interventions from early ages of children with autism and learning disabilities.
