    Story

    Ben Gregory's Recovery Fund

Ben is a 3 times Commonwealth Games decathlete and is a Welsh record holder within the sport. Since retiring from athletics in 2019, Ben has gone on to compete in functional fitness competitions and holds a World Record in Hyrox Men's and Mixed Relay, as well as winning a Silver Medal at Hyrox World Championships Vegas in the Men's Doubles. Ben is a proud Coach at MANOR London and is an integral part of the community there. He's described by his peers as "the life and soul of MANOR".

On the 19th August, Ben was hit by a car whilst cycling home in London. He sustained catastrophic brain injuries and the first responders from London’s Air Ambulance didn’t expect Ben to make it to the hospital alive. He was put straight into a medically induced coma to give him a fighting chance.

Ben has spent every single day since then beating the odds.

Recovery from such traumatic brain injuries is incredibly uncertain, in terms of timelines and outcomes. We already know that Ben will need ‘Level 1’ neurological rehabilitation for highly complex, life altering brain injuries. He will need to relearn how to talk, walk and do simple tasks for himself. The incredible work by the earth angels of the NHS can only take Ben so far. While he may get 1 speech therapy session a week at the rehab unit, we know he will need 3. He might be allocated 2 physiotherapy sessions a week from the NHS, but we know he will need 2 a day.

This is what your donations will be contributing to; Ben’s future outcomes.

The people Ben has around him for the next 18 months, combined with the money we can raise, will be absolutely critical to Ben’s long term recovery. We are asking you on his behalf, because he can’t ask for your help right now.

We have no doubt that Ben won’t just survive this accident, he will LIVE. He will live a boundless Ben Gregz kind of life, full of ambition, adventure and purpose.

Ben has a depth of strength and resilience admired by everyone who knows him and a fighting spirit that has pulled him through weeks on life support. Now he needs everyone to rally and be a part of his long road to recovery.

    With love and immense gratitude,

    Ben’s Family.

Ben has now settled into his new bed on the neurological ward, on the 12th floor of the Royal London Hospital. He has an amazing view of London, lots more natural light through the windows and more visiting hours allowed. Ben seems to be moving his head and focusing on people a lot more than a week ago. These small wins equal great leaps in brain injury recovery. Thank you all again for your kind donations and positive thoughts X

After 4 weeks in Intensive Care, Ben has been moved to the High Dependency Unit (still at The Royal London Hospital), for patients whose condition is no longer critical, but still need a lot of care. We are all very relieved to see Ben out of Intensive Care and onto the next step in his recovery.

Thank you so so much for all of your incredibly kind donations to support Ben's recovery. We will be sharing a weekly update on Ben's progress here. It's been a big week of small wins for Ben; he is now breathing entirely on his own for the first time. The docs also used a hoist to get him out of bed and into a chair - it was amazing to see him out of bed for the first time in nearly 4 weeks. His eyes are mostly open now and slowly beginning to focus a bit more each day. We feel he is beginning to recognise voices and faces. X
