Story

Hello, my name is Benji Heaton. I am now 25 years old and I was born with a disability called Bilateral talipes. This is a disability which affected both of my legs from the calf down, resulting in a deformity in the feet.

When I was only a few moths old I had my first operation to correct my feet and had thirteen operations in total until the age of 10.

I have a twin sister and a brother who is a year older than me. I found it hard growing up around them because after each operation I had to be in a wheelchair for a month or so afterwards and then had to learn to walk again so I never had that fun of a childhood.

Since my last operation at aged 10 I have done my best to overcome my disability by regularly playing sport and keeping as active as possible because I appreciate the fact that I am now able to do this.

Although now I no longer require any more treatment I still get pain in my feet every morning due to the lack of flexibility I have but stretching helps this.

Due to my disability my calves are much smaller than a person without the disability would have. This has really affected my self confidence as I do not feel comfortable wearing shorts and every time I look in the mirror it reminds me that I am not happy with the way I look.

Unfortunately due to this being a ‘cosmetic’ procedure the NHS are unwilling to assist me so I have had to go the private route. The total cost of the treatment is £8500 which will consist of them putting 2 silicone implants in both of my legs.

My parents and my siblings have been extremely supportive all of my life and I so lucky to have them as my family.

I appreciate you for taking the time to read my story. Any donation will honestly make a difference to me.

Thank you.
