Story
On Saturday 16 March 2024, a group of mates will lace up their hiking boots and embark on a gruelling fundraising walk in memory of Ben Woods.
Forty friends and relatives, of all ages and abilities, will undertake the punishing 25-mile Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge within 12 hours, to remember the much-loved 20-year-old who tragically passed away in July 2022.
Ben was renowned for his fearless attitude to tackling a challenge on and off the rugby pitch. In a fitting tribute to this, all participants embarking on the walk will do so with a 35lb weight in their backpack (plus food and drink). That's the equivalent to 15 litres of water, eight bags of potatoes, a crate of beer or even two car tyres!
Ben was a keen rugby league player and funds raised from the challenge will facilitate a heart screening event, hosted by Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), at local rugby club Golborne Parkside.
The event will see a minimum of 100 members of the Golborne Parkside community provided with ECG heart tests and screening.
The aim of a screening programme is to detect any underlying cardiac conditions. In 80 percent of cases of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) there are no prior symptoms of a heart defect. The frequency of YSCD can be dramatically reduced by making heart screenings available to all young people.
This unique test of endurance will honour Ben’s legacy. Your donations could potentially help save the lives of others and all support is hugely appreciated. Thank you.
