Story
Lest we forget, in memory.
We take great pride in our armed forces and honour the fallen who served protecting our nation and the ones we love. As a testament our nation is dotted with memorials to our brave men and women.
There is such a memorial to our local heroes who hailed from Balsall Common and Berkswell. It can be found near to the entrance of St John the Baptist church.
Originally commissioned entirely by private funds from local people it is constructed of red sandstone, a popular local stone. Unfortunately, it has suffered the ravages of time and now is in desperate need of repair and partial reconstruction.
A group of willing volunteers representing the Parish Council, Berkswell Society, Berkswell Charities and St John the Baptist church formed a small committee to commission an architectural survey which identified significant damage which has dislodged parapet stones and destabilised the roof structure.
The survey has estimated the repairs to be in the region of £50,000.
There are many ways to raise funding for war memorial preservation but it has to be initially community led.
This is where you come in!
It is thought approximately £45,000 can be found from grants providing we can raise approximately £5000 from the community.
A Just Giving page has been set up to enable the community to make donations in memory of those who gave their lives.
If you wish to make a donation, however small please visit Just Giving and search for "Berkswell war memorial restoration fund".
Remember every pound raised will attract £10 worth of grants.

1 year agoThank you for your contribution to the Berkswell War Memorial Restoration Fund. You and others have helped us raise £8597.61 from the public appeal. We have also been able to add the name of Cpl Timms to the list of fallen who was missed 100 years ago. The parish council has secured a grant of £25,970 from the HS2 Community fund and is applying to the War Memorial Trust. The Berkswell Charities have also agreed a grant of £2000. We think we will be able to secure the £50k necessary. Andrew Burrow War Memorial Restoration Committee
