Story

Sooty a stray cat, came in with a tail pull injury., usually caused by an RTA (road traffic accident) but can even be from accidentally shutting a cats tail in a door or standing on them.

He has a necrotic tail from nerve damage and was totally incontinent. His scrotum had an infection possibly from over grooming as he can't feel when it starts to hurt. The same goes for his tail. His legs and feet were blistered, presumably from being soaked in strong (overflow) urine which is made worse by being unneutered.

He also had an abscess on his neck.

He now needs his urine expressing daily until his bladder has a chance to recover from the trauma (this recovery is possible after weeks or usually months but sometimes never).

This MAY not recover, but there is a chance it could.

Because there is an issue ethically with the vets with expressing urine daily (as most cats do not like it to say the least and also ideally it should be done 3 times a day by a veterinary professional) it can be viewed as unkind/stressful therefore vets advise the cat should be euthanised..

However, having two rescue cats that have both suffered trauma and the ensuing amputation of the tail who have both now fully recovered, i would like to give Sooty every chance to lead a full life.

He needs his tail amputating and he will be castrated at the same time. EDIT: apparently a catheter has to be monitored 24 hours a day ideally incase of blockage or twisting, so this may not be possible unless it is an urgent necessity and funds can provide for a hospital stay (up to 3 weeks it is reported to take!) I have deleted that he will have a catheter fitted as they also only last for approx 3 days at a time and can increase risk of an infection.

This operation is vital and his only chance to TRY to help him recover and lead a full life.

He currently is on a relaxant for his bladder, antibiotics and pain relief.

He already had a blood test which showed at the moment his kidneys are ok, but that does not mean there is no damage done.

The vets say they can not justify putting him through the discomfort of expressing urine daily as so far he has shown no improvement and operating is the only other step to proceed with.

Without the operation he will be put to sleep as it makes it harder to express urine as far as i know and he would likely end up with kidney damage.

There are cats in rescue or even private homes who are disabled and competent experienced carers are able to express urine so that these cats can and do live a happy life.

PLEASE HELP SOOTY!

PLEASE NOTE

EDIT: 22/1/21 Please see updates here and on Best Friends Sanctuary on facebook SOOTY has had his operation thanks to you all! I will post a few receipts this weekend to show some of the bills to date.

EDIT:17/1/21 I have increased the target to include all costs + operation estimate so far. just giving set the original amount at £500 so initially it was that to set an achievable goal. With the minimum his op will cost (£700- i am waiting for vet confirmation on price + £400 costs so far ) aftercare and short term ongoing needs like vet visits, i think this is more realistic. thanks for sharing.

£500 is a rough guide, the last cat in a very similar position a couple of years ago, had her tail amputated and was neutered and it cost around £700 not including all the pre amputation treatment and post op care.

I am happy to refund any money if the operation is not/can not be performed. Please email bestfriendssanctuary@outlook.com if you would like to be refunded. But please check here for updates to find out as i can only update on justgiving, not personally notify. His care so far has cost well over £300 .

Any money over the cost of the operation and any aftercare (if applicable) would be 100% spent on the other animals at the sanctuary, for instance vaccinations and vet checks and flea and wormer to hopefully get some of the potentially rehomeable cats ready to be adopted.
