Story
My friend is a teacher at an inner city primary school in Tottenham for students who largely come from low socio-economic and often challenging backgrounds.
For many of his students, Tottenham and its immediate vicinity is all they know. The opportunity to visit the many great attractions in the UK is often not grasped by their families. Consequently, their life experience is increasingly limited, particularly in contrast to their peers with more enriched lives.
His class will have national exams in the summer and work incredibly hard in preparation. Subsequently, we would like to plan a trip outside of London to the beach. This will be the furthest many of the children will have ever been and for some, possibly the furthest they may go for several years. However, a trip like this attracts a cost, primarily for transport and would require 2 coaches for 90 children plus adults. The outlay for the trip would therefore be around £2000.
I cannot emphasise the benefit of a trip like this for the students. It will provide them with a brief yet invaluable experience that they would otherwise be unexposed to and one that so many of us take for granted. Funding in schools is increasingly limited and with all the pressures upon schools, inner city schools like mine struggle to fund opportunities like this which as teachers we regularly lament.
Thank you SO much for helping!
