Story

I'm doing the ‘Half a Mil in May’ challenge, which involves completing a total of 500,000 steps by the end of the month (this averages out at about 16,130 steps a day).

With working in London and spending most of my time either on the train or sat at my desk eating hula hoops, it’s a rare occasion that I get beyond about 6,000 steps on an average weekday. I’m really hoping that by taking this challenge on I’ll be forced to get off my ass and achieve something that might be very doable for some, but for me will require some real effort and dedication.

The main reason I’m doing this, however, is to ask for your help in raising a bit of dollar for a cause I desperately want to support. The Ocean Cleanup are a global charity doing incredible work to clear the 5 trillion pieces of plastic that currently float in our seas – polluting the water and threatening our precious marine species. It’s one of the biggest environmental issues of our time.

This charity work tirelessly to free the 5 largest “ocean garbage patches” of toxic plastic waste, and they’re doing it using planet-friendly technologies. Going after the plastic with vessels and nets would be costly, time-consuming, labor-intensive and lead to vast amounts of carbon emissions and by-catch. That’s why they’re developing a passive system and utilizing natural ocean currents to clean up our seas before it’s too late.

Plastic pollution does not only impact sea life, but it also carries toxic pollutants into the food chain – a food chain including us humans. The Ocean Cleanup are just one of many charities doing incredible work to save our planet and it’s our responsibility to support and supplement their efforts. There are SO many things we can do to help and reduce our day-to-day plastic usage.

Completing 500,000 steps in a month is most definitely going to be a challenge, but I’m hoping that by getting out and about more I’ll see more of this beautiful city/country and get to spend extra time with my family & friends in the process!

If you can spare a couple of quid this month, then please please please donate whatever you can. It’s an important cause and it affects us all. Much love xxx
