Story
‘Be the change’ is a non-profit organisation set up to respond to the basic needs of the homeless in Glasgow. We are on a mission to seek out those who are on the fringes of society who are struggling to find support. Where there is darkness in our city we seek to bring change and share a light to those who need it most. We cannot wait for our government to change this situation, we believe that in the words of Gandhi we must ‘be the change we wish to see in the world’.
In the UK we are facing a crisis where many people are finding themselves on the streets due to a lack of many of their material, emotional and mental needs being met. Most are without a home, most are unemployed, most have no means of taking care of their basic day to day needs, many have illnesses, many have addictions, many have mental health struggles, many have been rejected by family and society in general and many just don’t know where to turn to receive help.
’Be the change’ is a simple outreach. One day a week we go out into the city centre in Glasgow and offer soup, sandwiches, clothes, toiletries and other material things to those on the streets. We also offer a few moments where people can just talk, where we can get to know them and let them share. We are currently working on an information pack to also hand out where people have information about where they can receive farther help ie hostels, support groups, legal help, soup kitchens etc. We do not give out money, we only provide material and moral support.
We are not counsellors or therapists but our aim is to get the ball rolling for many who are scared to reach out and give them links to other outreach programmes in Glasgow.
Our aim to respond to the basic needs of the homeless in Glasgow is simple but necessary. We know that we may not be able to change the whole situation or each person we reach out to but for a few minutes we aim to restore their dignity and show them that they are not alone.
This page has been set up to allow people to contribute money to our ongoing work. We are always in need of volunteers, material goods and donations. As we are a non-profit organisation we rely on the generosity of our volunteers and those who donate.
We are a very new organisation but with time we hope to expand and build up a base where people can leave material goods, receive training on outreach work and develop more of an understanding of how we can use our skills to help those in need.
If you would like to keep updated on our work, volunteer, donate or contribute in any way you can please like our Facebook page ‘Be the Change’ and we can update you on outreach dates and appeals.
We thank you for any way in which you can help.
