For years I had an elderly couple live opposite me called Brian and Betty. They were so well known and liked and knew everyone. They used to take in parcels for all the neighbours and look after everyone. Sometimes when I came in from a night shift, Brian would hand me a tupperware bowl of curry that he had made and saved some for me so I didn't have to cook when I got in. They were so generous to everyone and everyone loved them. Sadly 2 years ago, Brian passed away and Betty, having been used to having Brian look after her for so long, was suddenly left alone and afraid. She couldn't really cook and a lot of things frightened her. She sadly had to move away as she couldn't afford to stay in the rented house they shared and has now moved back into the village. However, the place she is living at has a very long tiled staircase from the outer front door to her flat door. Betty is now 82 years old and although she is mentally very active, she struggles getting around a bit and uses a walking frame on wheels to help her get about. She is afraid of going to the doctors or dentist, even though I try to persuade her. It's clear she has terrible issues with her knees. The main problem are those stairs! She has to hang on to the hand rail and come down sideways one at a time and she's always scared of falling. She can't get her shopping up, without either having help or putting each bag on the next step up and then going up the stairs that way, which takes a long time and exhausts her. Similarly, when she is trying to put her rubbish out, she struggles to get the bags down the steps. I help out as much as I can, but she really needs assistance with those stairs. She doesn't want to move, as she likes the area where she is, so I am doing this without her knowledge, to show her that people do care about others and that she is not alone. Will you please help fund Betty a stair lift to make her life so much easier. Lets show her that angels do exist! Thank you for reading.
