Story

BUCKHURST HILL CRICKET & LACROSSE CLUB

A serious FLOOD WARNING just before Christmas from the ENVIRONMENT AGENCY gave us a few hours to take some precautions. Mowers were put on pallets in the groundsman's shed and as many items as possible were raised off the floor in the Roding Lane Pavilion.

The ground is on a flood plain and has previously flooded 10 years ago and also 20 years ago with 3ft. 9ins. of water in RLP. Hence we do not have flood cover under our insurance.

What happened?

Water from the River Roding soon flooded our ground to a DEPTH OF 6 INCHES IN RODING LANE PAVILION which is built on 18 INCH BRICK PIERS

What now?

FRIDGES & FREEZERS in the kitchen and bar need to be replaced and NEW FLOOR COVERING in the TEA ROOM, MAIN CORRIDORS, DRESSING & UMPIRES' ROOMS.

What has been done since?

A few volunteers have worked very hard led by John Chipperfield Jnr. to remove the existing floor coverings, namely warped wood in the tea room and carpet laid over hardboard in the other rooms. This leaves the original plywood floor to dry out helped by the central heating, electric fans and a good flow of air possible owing to the brick piers already mentioned.
