Story

I'm the director of BHC Housing, a grassroots community organisation tackling the housing affordability crisis in Brighton & Hove.

The housing affordability crisis is extreme. Only 12% of the city's housing is below the expensive market rents, including 10% for social rent. Wages don't rise in line with housing inflation, and rental housing is often below decent standards and only comes with short-term tenancies, leaving tenants at constant risk of homelessness.

We're crowdfunding to purchase housing in the city to provide homes for local residents and workers, with income-based rents and secure tenancies, meaning tenants can "put down roots" and make longer-term plans. All our properties will be affordable minimum for minimum wage earners.

We seek to raise £1 million in 1 year to buy a mix of houses and flats, that will be protected for the long-term benefit of the city's residents and workers.

To help address the 3 global crises of climate warming, biodiversity collapse, and environmental pollution, we will upgrade our properties and rejuvenate our land as appropriate. Heating insulation will save energy and help tackle energy poverty too.

Please help make a difference now and for future generations. All rents will be re-invested to buy new housing and pay for ecological and efficiency upgrades, so your donation will keep on giving.

Thank you.
