In 2014, in Bududa (Uganda), as an Independent Volunteer, I set up a Kids Klub which ran as a pilot for 1 year. Now, I want to restart Kids Klub and set up satellite clubs in the villages so children don;t have to walk hours to get there or otherwise be excluded.

The aim is to build self-esteem, aspirations and capability within children from a poverty stricken area. The strategy is to use games and exercises to build creativity, leadership and team work skills. The method of delivery is informal, fun and with no corporal punishment. This allowed the children to be free to take risks (and unlock their creativity). Creativity is essential for survival in country like Uganda where opportunities can appear limited.

The results from the pilot were confident children, with raised aspirations and a thirst to learn how they could continue to develop themselves.

There were of course challenges to overcome - funding, obviously. The aid dependent mentality another - but, with children, their minds being so flexible, they quickly see the benefits of self-reliance.

I intend to work with the local community to select and train the right people to become Kids Klub Facilitators. With evidence and learning gained from the pilot, we can create a (low) income generating Kids Klub which would then be eligible to attract a community development grant from the government for further expansion. (These grants are not readily available). UPDATE: These grants have been withdrawn without a known reason!

Funds raised are for the inevitable costs associated with training people with limited education backgrounds, which includes ongoing mentoring and capacity building strategies.
