Story

My name is Bikram, I am 46 years old and a Maths teacher from Birmingham.I am not quite sure how to articulate this. My first referral to an NHS specialist led to a myriad of tests which all came back negative. Then he tested me for Lyme disease which came back with an overall negative. I had never heard of Lyme disease nor was I ever aware of so many tick-borne infections. I did not receive any treatment despite a positive Elisa and the huge rashes on my back where never fully investigated. I saved up enough money to have private tests in Germany which both suggested Lyme disease. I asked for a breakdown of my NHS tests which showed reactions for very specific proteins carried by the Lyme bacteria. After a conversation with the infectious disease specialist he suggested that the specialised tests performed in Germany were of little diagnostic value, that the rashes were most likely fungal and that the NHS tests that did react were false positives. This was despite my symptoms matching the criteria Lyme specialist list across the world. He also point blank refused a PCR test which could confirm whether or not I had Lyme and refused any therapy even as a precautionary measure. My own GP's are hand-tied and readily defer to the NHS specialist. Through out this time I have tried to keep afloat and teach as much as I can but I cannot help the feeling that somewhere along the line I am going to deteriorate to the point that nothing can be done. It is with great sadness that today I have turned to the good nature of the public to see if I can raise enough money to get treated at a specialist private hospital in the UK.
