Story

Last summer, we went to New Ireland, Papua New Guinea for our medical elective. We had the opportunity to spend 4 weeks helping out at Kavieng Provincial Hospital. This is a small rural hospital which serves a population of 190,000 people, many of whom travel hours on small boats to get to the hospital. We were struck by the lack of resources in the hospital and the impact this had on the people of PNG. It was heart-breaking to see many patients, including many children, die of conditions that can be easily identified and treated in the UK. We were privileged to work alongside doctors who dedicate their lives to do their best for people with the little that they have.

We hope to set up a charity for the hospital called 'Bilas Peles Trust', which means beautiful place in Pidgin (widely spoken language in PNG). Kavieng truly is a beautiful place with the most affectionate people, who constantly showered us with love. We have challenged ourselves to run our first ever half-marathon to raise money for medical supplies. Two of us (Tatenda and Beth) will be running the Norwich half-marathon on 7th April 2019 and Aruni will be running the Milton Keynes half-marathon on 6th May 2019. This is for a cause that is very close to our hearts and we would really appreciate any donations as every penny will go so far!

Thanks for all your support,

Bethany, Tatenda, Aruni and Hannah
