Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
They say that mixing friends and money never ends well, and in the last year and a half I have realised this myself in a massive way. Having been fortunate enough to be in a position to help out a friend who was going through a dark patch, I have found myself being left on the way-side paying off somebody else's debt as they refuse to step up and pay back what is owed.
In a round about way, I consider myself fortunate that I am able to afford to pay the monthly repayments without it affecting my record or causing too big an imposition on my life. However I know there are people out there who aren't as fortunate as me. There are people out there who's lives have come to a halt, as what little money they have gets siphon off pay off a loved ones debt.
Money is so easy to borrow these days, and with a simple tick of a box, somebody can take out a loan as long as they have somebody else guaranteeing the funds. True, that the guarantor takes the responsibility and risk for doing such a thing, but in my case, I had no reason to believe that I would ever need to step in and pay. I think most people feel the same.
What these loan companies do, is take the risk off the person who needs the money and places it on the individual who stepped into help, and that is exactly what happened with me. Every month became a tug of war between me and my friend, and myself and the loan company demanding the cash. If the repayment wasn't made, who got the black dot? Who's door did they come knocking on? Mine.
I could very easily unfriend/block/delete this person from my life, but until the loan is repaid, there is a constant weight and sense of dread that I need to bare.
This fund raising isn't just to help me, but hopefully it will get the ball rolling to start helping others out there who are stuck in the same position. Low income families stuck in a financial black hole due to a co-signed loan. It's for the people who's lives have had to change for the worse so they can scrape together the money to keep the loan sharks fed. It is for anyone else that has had a good deed taken advantage of.
I know the pain and frustration that this caused, and if I can help alleviate this for somebody else along the way, at least this will be somewhat worth it.
