    Story

    Skips for CARERS Campaign

From assisting with grooming and getting dressed, to grocery shopping with their allergy in mind, preparing and serving meals at the right time considering patient preference, giving mental and emotional care to supporting patients to their favorite café for coffee or beloved park some fresh air, and making suggestions to family members and healthcare staffs on the care plan ideas, caring for others can be very fulfilling, although it can as well be very demanding; mentally, physically, and emotionally. It involves a deep level of dedication that it becomes more than just a job – it is a profession.

One main issue for carers is the fact that they are either standing all day or walking from one home to the other in other to provide adequate care for service users in their own home, causing a myriad of health complications and uncomfortable effects, including issues like:

    • Leg cramps

    • Exhaustion and fatigue.

    • Backache.

    • Plantar fasciitis,

    • Bunions and corns: and

    • Excess pressure on the joints

Though black, other minority groups, and white carers encounter high levels of these complications and uncomfortable effects and other complexities in their caring role, black carers are well-known to experience distinctive challenges in gaining access to support services due to a lack of self-identification among black carers causing the lack of policy inclusion of their needs, deepened by conventional assumptions of their needs and how it should be supported.

Skip for carers- is an event created by BWIC that encourages people to skip/or walk-in carers’ shoes by taking 2000 steps or doing 200 skips daily for 10days to support carers

If you would like to be a part of and are unsure how you can join the Black Women in Care one-million-skips- for-carers’ challenge, you can create a personal or team fundraising link to this cause to support us in reaching our target

Keep up the good work. The cost of living is really getting higher, carers need all the support they can get.
