Story

Founded in 1998, Blackburn Thunder Ice Hockey Club is one of only two women’s ice hockey teams in the North West and competes in the Northern Division One women’s league.

After a rocky past few years sitting at the bottom of the league, our dedication and hard work has paid off and we finished second in the Northern league, earning the club’s first ever invite to the playoffs! We finished the season on a high, only losing in the final to finish second nationally in Division One.

As the club enters its 20th year, we are confident that this will be the season for us to take the league title. However, restructuring of the league format and the rising costs of ice time has put us in a difficult financial situation.

Blackburn Thunder is completely self-funded by its players; our monthly subs pay for rink hire and referees, whist personal expense covers equipment and travel across the country to games. We only have a small squad and so are desperately struggling to find the funds internally to maintain the club for the coming season.

The purpose of this page is not only to raise funds but to help raise awareness about women’s ice hockey in the UK and hopefully encourage more ladies to join the sport.

Any donations received will be greatly appreciated and go a long way towards ensuring our club can take part in the season ahead. All money raised will be used to pay for rink hire and referees fees. Please share our story and increase the awareness of women’s Ice Hockey.
