    2019 PRESIDENT'S APPEAL

Bala Lake Railway's signal box at Llanuwchllyn occupies a prominent position on the platform. It is a rare G.W.R. Type 5 box and houses the last G.W.R. double twist lever frame still signalling passenger trains on its original site. The signal box is routinely open on operational days, our visitors being encouraged to visit.

The signal box really is the jewel in the Bala Lake Railway's crown. However it is currently in a poor state of repair.

The main problem is rot. At the station end, the boards on the gable need complete replacement as does the corner post supporting the roof. The steps need to be replaced, repairs are needed to the door and windows need heavy repair / replacement.

It is proposed that repairs are undertaken using hardwood that will last very many years. Work will be progressed by our in-house carpentry team. Once the work is done, the box will need a repaint, the brickwork will need re-pointing and, to finish the job in style, it is proposed that the box receive a cast G.W.R nameboard.

Having led the way with a VERY significant donation of his own, BLRS President Peter Miller has launched an appeal to raise funds to complete the work and to cover contingencies.

    CAN YOU HELP?

All donations received will be used to buy the materials that will restore the glory of this historically important signal box.

...to do so once I have closed the appeal. I don't know if that's how it works - but if I can I will. Meanwhile, of course, do keep an eye on the BLR Webcam to see what is going on at Llanuwchllyn and do make a point of seeking out the monthly news update on the website too. If you are not a member of the BLR Society please do consider joining. It's really inexpensive and the pennies really do help. And you'll receive the quarterly journal of course. Information can be found on the BLR website. Right. That's it for now. Thanks for reading!

...and all this at a time when we are all under the strains imposed by the CV19 crisis. I know for a fact that all the permanent staff and volunteers of the Bala Lake Railway are hugely grateful for the support that has been shown. I am sure I don't need to labour the point so I'll just say Thank You on behalf of us all. And what next? Well I will continue to bring news of the signal box's restoration in future editions of Llanuwchllyn Express (the journal of the BLRS) and I will continue to post updates on just giving - assuming I am able.....

But it's not too late to donate if you wish! The BLRS and the appeal can always use the pennies. Even once the online appeal is closed, the BLRS can of course accept donations via cheque or other means to support the signal box renovations and/or its ongoing support of the BLR. The generosity of our supporters this past year has been astonishing. Collectively you've supported not just this appeal but the BLR's CV19 appeal - and now there is the ongoing Sleeper Appeal to help the Railway meet the cost on ongoing track renewal work. ..continues >
