2019 PRESIDENT'S APPEAL

Bala Lake Railway's signal box at Llanuwchllyn occupies a prominent position on the platform. It is a rare G.W.R. Type 5 box and houses the last G.W.R. double twist lever frame still signalling passenger trains on its original site. The signal box is routinely open on operational days, our visitors being encouraged to visit.

The signal box really is the jewel in the Bala Lake Railway's crown. However it is currently in a poor state of repair.

The main problem is rot. At the station end, the boards on the gable need complete replacement as does the corner post supporting the roof. The steps need to be replaced, repairs are needed to the door and windows need heavy repair / replacement.

It is proposed that repairs are undertaken using hardwood that will last very many years. Work will be progressed by our in-house carpentry team. Once the work is done, the box will need a repaint, the brickwork will need re-pointing and, to finish the job in style, it is proposed that the box receive a cast G.W.R nameboard.

Having led the way with a VERY significant donation of his own, BLRS President Peter Miller has launched an appeal to raise funds to complete the work and to cover contingencies.

CAN YOU HELP?

All donations received will be used to buy the materials that will restore the glory of this historically important signal box.

Hello Everyone. The BLRS President's Appeal remains open. With CV19 at large and the Railway closed there is no activity ongoing - but this will change when we can all start to go about our previous lives and activities. In the meantime, may I draw your attention to the upcoming BLR Virtual Gala. It's going to be held on Facebook on 13th June - with loads of interesting videos to be seen. Please do consider buying the gala guide - mayhaps even a copy of the Llanuwchllyn Express Special Edition which is soon to be announced. Thanks Nick T BLRS

Meanwhile volunteer signalman Bernard Allman has been busy repainting the levers in the signal box. The sharp-eyed visitor will notice that the locking levers are now a lighter shade of blue, the repaint removing the previous tone (i.e. Holy War blue) and replacing it with what we are assured is a more appropriate and authentic tone. Here ends the May 2020 update on the Signal box repair progression. Thank you to all donors for their support. We hope to make much progress once the CV19 allows us to re-open. Stay safe! Kind rgds, Nick Talbot

A start has been made on the construction of replacement steps. The current steps have a 45° gradient - this being steeper than the original. It took quite some time and effort to design a set with a 42° gradient that starts and finishes in the right place and has the correct spacing for the steps however a blueprint is now in hand. One of the stringers (the long side piece to which the steps are attached) had been cut to size before CV-19 stopped play. (Ctd>>>)
