Rotherham District Civic Society is proud to have an impressive Blue Plaque scheme that is recognised and celebrated as a symbol of Rotherham's heritage and a living footprint of the Town's history.
The increasing number of Blue Plaques unveiled serves as a permanent reminder to the important contributions of the history of Rotherham, the country and the World.
The Rotherham District Civic Society commemorates the contributions, lives and notable influences it has excerted together with succesful people from all walks of life.
The work of the society is only made possible through its membership which has considerably reduced, the sale of its publications and support through generous donations.
The long term future of the Blue Plaque scheme relies entirely upon the generosity of those who value its historic significance. As a Registered Charity (No. 258831) we seek everyone support to continue the recognition and placement of these important markers.
The approximate manufacturing cost of a Blue Plaque is £500. If you value the work of the Rotherham District Civic Society please consider making a donation no matter how small which will exclusively go towards celebrating the achievement of the Walker Family.
The Walker Family
The Walker Family was without doubt one of the most influential and wealthiest families in Rotherham. Several generations in turn contributed towards establishing the family as pioneers of Rotherham Industry.
The Walker Iron Works in Rotherham was established in 1746, marking the beginning of a significant era in the town's industrial history. The ironworks quickly gained prominence as a major industrial hub in the region and played a vital role in the growth and development of Rotherham's iron and steel industry during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The ironworks specialized in the production of various iron and steel products, including machinery, tools, and components for industrial use. The skilled craftsmen and workers employed at the Walker Iron Works helped fuel the industrial revolution in Rotherham, contributing to the town's economic prosperity.
Samuel Walker is best known for his association with the Walker Cannon, a renowned piece of artillery. The Walker Cannon, also referred to as the Rotherham Cannon, was a powerful weapon crafted by Samuel Walker himself, showcasing his exceptional skills as a master gunsmith.
Samuel Walker's ingenuity and craftsmanship made the Walker Cannon highly sought after during that era. Its precision and effectiveness on the battlefield earned it a fearsome reputation. The cannon became a symbol of military prowess and innovation, making Samuel Walker a respected figure in the field of artillery manufacturing.
Samuel Walker's contributions to the field of gunsmithing and his association with the Walker Cannon left an indelible mark on military history. His work represents the innovation and dedication of skilled artisans of the time.
We aim to raise £8,000 to be able to site and unveil 16 Blue Plaques.
